Genevieve Marie Sherwood, 98, of South Connellsville, passed away peacefully on Friday April 19, 2024 at home.
She was born December 28, 1925 in South Connellsville, a daughter of the late Andrew G. and Rose P. (Borak) Vinoski.
For a few years, Genevieve worked at Anchor Hocking as a selector. She then began a job as a waitress for Schraft's Restaurant in N.Y., where she received a gold medal for 10 years of service. When she returned home to Connellsville, she became employed at a tavern, where she worked in the kitchen, making everything from scratch. Nothing the tavern sold was made outside of the business, even the pizza dough was made by hand; no machine. After working at the tavern, Genevieve met her husband Jim and they married shortly after in 1967. They were happily married for 37 years until Jim’s passing.
Genevieve and her husband worked for their church, Holy Trinity. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Rosary Society and was their treasurer for at least 25 years until the church’s closure.
Genevieve is survived by her sisters, Helen Lubash of Greensburg and Rose Marie Cowan of South Connellsville; sisters-in-law, Em Vinoski, Shirley Vinoski and Cindy Vinoski and brothers in law, Ray Frazier and Bud Fraysher, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. The family would like to acknowledge Genevieve’s 3 special nieces, Cynthia Derunk, Chris Richey, and Sue Hiltabidel.
The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice for the care Genevieve received.
In addition to her parents, Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, James Sherwood; her brothers, Edward (Wife Dooley), Walt ( Wife Erma), Ted, Tom, Paul and infant Paul and sisters, Pauline Fraysher, Catherine Frazier, and Fran Benford (Husband Ed).
Family and friends will be received in the PAUL G. FINK FUNERAL HOME, INC. 418 North Pittsburgh Street Connellsville, PA 15425 on Sunday from 2pm – 4pm and 6pm – 8pm and on Monday from 11am until 12pm when Prayers of Transfer will be held.
